The behavior of the optical and radio synchrotron emission of the M87 (NGC 4486) jet is interpreted by assuming that a regular, gradually expanding magnetic field structure is recurrently ejected by the nucleus of the galaxy in the form of axisymmetric loops. The anisotropic flux of relativistic electrons generated in the nucleus will 'illuminate' for the observer only a portion of the loop magnetic field, thereby forming the knot configurations observed. The dynamics of the field expansion and the stability of the field in the loops (in the knots) are examined. Empirical evidence supporting this model for the jet is discussed.
