Various radiation sources are examined with special reference to such characteristics and structural features which could be of interest to the developers of optical systems for solar simulators. The sources discussed include xenon lamps, mercury-xenon lamps, carbon arcs, and spherical mercury arc lamps. It is shown that for solar simulator applications preference should be given to xenon lamps due to their high luminance, small dimensions of the luminous body, and an energy distribution that is close to that of the sun. With the development of a dismountable vacuum-tight lead having water-cooled electrodes it has become possible to build lamps with a power of up to 30 kW. The power of the newly developed metal xenon lamp can amount to 60-80 kW for an arc length of 4-4.5 cm and a luminance of 5-6 x 10 to the 8th units.
