A model is developed for isolated black holes accreting material from interstellar space at an accretion rate such that the X-ray luminosity is subcritical. It is assumed that the X-rays are produced in a disklike shell at a radius of the order of 10,000 times the black-hole mass, rather than near the hole's surface. Some predictions of this model are discussed for X-ray burst sources and the bizarre emission-line object SS433.
