Implications of recent unified field theories for the presumed isotropy and homogeneity of the early universe are examined. It is argued that the nonconservation of baryon number necessitated by the grand unification of the strong, weak and electromagnetic forces by a gage theory implies that entropy cannot be used as a probe of the initial geometry of the universe. It is thus possible that the universe could have begun as a highly chaotic state with a definite number of cold baryons, which became isotropic and homogeneous early in its history as a result of dissipative processes. The conserved quantity in some unified field theories, B - L, where B is the baryon number and L is the lepton number, is also shown not to be a suitable quantity to use in the determination of the initial state of the universe, due to the present inability to detect 2-K neutrinos.
