All ground based high energy gamma ray detectors need to eliminate as many cosmic ray induced shower triggers as possible. This paper discusses techniques to achieve gamma-hadron separation and thereby improve the sensitivity of Milagro to gamma ray showers. These methods depend primarily on the two level structure of Milagro to recognize the penetrating power and clustering characteristic of hadron induced showers. Results from simulation studies are presented. The gamma-hadron cuts can improve the ratio, signal/background, by more than a factor of two, which corresponds to rejecting more than 90 percent of cosmic ray induced showers. .
