Nearly 60% of the EGRET sources are still defeating our attempts at identifying them. The present strategy to elucidate their nature is three-fold: search for counterparts at other wavelengths; search for temporal signatures characteristic of pulsars, binaries or flaring sources; correlation studies to separate populations with distinct spectral/spatial/temporal behaviors. Although no clear picture has emerged yet as to the nature or variety of the objects involved, interesting clues have been recently gleaned from these three lines of work that may shed a new light on possible candidates besides the traditional pulsars and shell supernova remnants. Observational facts are briefly reviewed hereinafter and sprinkled with personal comments. .
