Current objectives of planetary science emphasize reconnaissance of a large variety of objects in the solar system, with intensive exploration of a much smaller number. Targets for intensive exploration are selected either with a view to discovering unusually important clues to the origin and evolution of the solar system or to obtaining particularly valuable insights into the complex physical and chemical processes which regulate the atmosphere, ocean, and interior of earth. Venus and Mars were selected for intensive exploration in the inner solar system. Mission complete (Mariner 10) or underway (Pioneer and Voyager), have provided, or will provide, reconnaissance of Mercury, Saturn, and Uranus and will aid in choice of targets for future exploration.
