Sensitive searches for H I emission and OH maser emission from nine (mostly southern) globular clusters, including some clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud, are described. No emission was detected. These upper limits, together with others previously published, show that the amount of gas in globulars is much lower than predicted by stellar evolution theory, by the apparent amount of dust in the clusters, and much lower than is required by some models for X-ray emission.
