Hypotheses advanced to explain the low content of gas in E galaxies are discussed. It is shown that the model of a stationary galactic wind proposed by Mathews and Baker is not consistent and that winds of such a kind cannot exist at the present time. Loss of gas on star formation can explain the observational data on E galaxies only if the supply of gas to the interstellar medium is fairly small. It is concluded that the main cause of the low gas content in E galaxies is the low rate of mass loss by stars during the present stage of evolution of the galaxies.
