We present the results from an ASCA spectral analysis of a sample of 9 Seyfert II galaxies, selected by their high [OIII]λ5007 flux, taken from Ho et al. and De Grijp et al. Such a sample should be relatively free from selection effects such as intrinsic absorption and differences in viewing angle. Our major results are as follow:a) four of our objects are described by the standard model expected from a Seyfert 2 galaxy and b) five show no or small excess absorption. We investigated whether the latter subsample includes Compton thick objects using the [OIII]λ5007 flux as an indicator. We find no Compton thick object other than the NGC1068. We discuss the implications of the lack of a universal description of the spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxies in conjunction with the models that try to reconstruct the spectrum of the X-ray Background. .
