Elliptical Galaxies, Magnetohydrodynamics And Plasmas

Scientific paper

An intriguing component of plasmas in galaxies is the extended, low excitation ionized gas commonly seen in active and giant elliptical galaxies in the form of optical line emitting filaments. Although small by mass, the energy output of these filaments is large. Understanding the origin of this plasma and how it interacts with other plasma phases, especially the coronal X-ray emitting gas, may provide important insight into the physics of plasmas in elliptical galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
