The large-scale convective state and its dynamics is still an open issue. We compare electric field maps obtained from two high-latitude models for different conditions of convection. AMIE is a assimilative technique integrating simultaneous radar, magnetometer, and other observations into an snapshot of the electrodynamic state of the high-latitude ionosphere. Electra is a dynamic model of the ground geomagnetic field with modules for ionospheric conductance and the KRM inversion technique. It is driven either by the Polar Cap index or by interplanetary key parameters (a time-dependent early version of the model is diplayed at the website below). We compare electric fields from the two techniques in the following types of convection/substorm regimes: a Southward to Northward turning; steady convection; and two small (-600 nT) substorms.
