Some stone meteorites with a typical light-dark structure contain primordial noble gases in their dark portion exclusively. The minerals and the textures of both light and dark portions in the Pantar chondrite and the Kapoeta achondrite were examined microscopically. The chemical composition of numerous grains of olivine, pyroxene, feldspar, nickel-iron, and troilite was determined using electron microprobe techniques. It was found that both light and dark material in a given meteorite consist of the same minerals with identical composition, but the two portions differ markedly with regard to grain size. Generally, minerals in the dark portions are fine-grained, while the light material has "normal" texture and grain size. Single crystals of the light material occasionally extend into the dark part. These findings indicate that these types of meteorites are not polymict breccias, but result from shock brecciation of originally homogeneous rock bodies monomict shock breccias. The distribution of rare gases is tentatively ascribed to selective trapping in some recrystallized minerals in the dark part which have been more severely altered by the shockwaves.
