Research on the Galactic center is reviewed. The discovery of emissions from the center of the Galaxy and recent studies of these emissions are discussed, including studies to detect and identify radio emission created by specific resonances of molecules. Consideration is given to streamers and arcs of ionized material in the Galactic center, the radio emission from SGR A-asterisk, studies of IR radiation from the Galactic center, gamma ray and X-ray observations, and instruments used to study the Galactic center such as the IRAS and the NASA Kuiper Astronomical Observatory. Also, annihilation radiation, the chemical composition of the Galactic center, the behavior of gas and dust, shock waves, the dense molecular dust clouds near the Galactic center, and the characteristics of stars near the Galactic center are examined. In addition, the possible existence of a black hole at the center of the Galaxy is discussed in detail.
