Chandra Proposal Id #02700703

Scientific paper

About half the known extragalactic optical jets (mostly those detected using earlier X-ray telescopes) have been observed with Chandra or are presently scheduled as targets. Here we propose observations of the four other known optical jets longer than 2~arcsec. Our purpose is to measure their X-ray outputs, determine whether the synchrotron or synchrotron self-Compton X-ray process dominates the radiation mechanism, and hence infer the energy distribution of the relativistic electron population below the limits probed by the radio maps (for synchrotron self-Compton emission) or above (for pure synchrotron jets).
