Scientific paper

The instrumentation and goals of the X-ray satellite Rosat are described. The development of instruments for X-ray astronomy is reviewed as a background to the description of the Rosat telescope and the XUV telescope, which is the British contribution to Rosat. The design and operation of the satellite are described along with the planned treatment of data collected by the satellite. The issues which Rosat is expected to help clarify are discussed, including those pertaining to white dwarfs, neutron stars, SNRs, normal galaxies, active galaxies, galactic clusters, diffuse X-ray radiation, flare stars, the Crab Nebula, X-ray sources in the Andromeda galaxy, and the cosmic background radiation.
