Scientific paper

This paper describes the first results from a survey for faint quasars based on a digital stack of 170 1.2-m Schmidt telescope plates. The limiting magnitude of R=23 with variability measures to R=21 over 19 deg^2 allows the measurement of space density to a redshift of z=4.5. After an initial steep rise to z=1.5, the space density relation flattens, and then declines gradually beyond z=3. The quasar luminosity function for 3.0
