The LMXB 4U 1636-53 is a prototype atol source in which a neutron star accretes matter from a low mass companion star producing moderate to sub-Eddington X-ray luminosities. The X-ray luminosity, and thus to a large extent mass-accretion rate, differs by orders of magnitude in different spectral states. 4U 1636-53 is mostly found in its lower banana state, where it exhibits type I X-ray bursts on quite regular time scales. It has been observed for 30 ks in AO1 but was found in a very bright state with no bursts and severe pile-up defects in the 1st order grating spectra. We propose to re-observe this target for another 30 ks with significantly reduced CCD frametime.
