Preliminary results are reported from test observations of SN 1987A obtained with a balloon-borne BGO-CsI phoswich gamma-ray detector system in the Supernova Gamma-Ray (SUGAR) experiment on October 10, 1987. The instrument design is shown in drawings and discussed, and sample data are presented in graphs. Good general agreement with the observations obtained by Althouse et al. (1987) using the GRIP instrument is demonstrated.
