The problems encountered in an effort to identify optical objects corresponding to X-ray sources detected with the Einstein Observatory imaging proportional counter are described. The approach employed is based on a computerized search of existing catalogs of celestial objects at positions within the Einstein error box. It is pointed out that such a search is relatively straightforward if the errors in the catalog positions are small, but becomes very time-consuming if they are large, or if the sources in question are extended nonstellar objects. These difficulties are demonstrated for 25 extragalactic objects and illustrated with tabulated data, angular-distance histograms, and sample images.
