The design and operation of the high-pressure gas-scintillation proportional counter (HPGSPC) used as the 3-120-keV detector for the narrow-field instrument package of SAX are described and illustrated with drawings, a block diagrams of the electronics, performance graphs, and tables of numerical specifications. In the HPGSPC gas cell, Xe atoms absorb an incoming X-ray, producing an electron cloud that migrates to the scintillation zone (electric field 4000 V/cm atm) and excites Xe atoms to form metastable Xe molecules, which then decay with emission of two UV (172-nm) photons per molecule; this emission is recorded by an array of photomultiplier tubes, yielding the arrival time, sum signal, electron-cloud position, and UV-burst duration. HPGSPC operational parameters include effective area 350 sq cm at 6 keV and 275 sq cm at 60 keV, FOV 1 deg FWHM, energy resolution 25 percent/sq rt E, spatial resolution 9 mm/sq rt E, and residual background 0.002 ct/sq cm sec keV.
