A new component of terrestrial continuum, kilometric continuum, has been detected by the Geotail satellite at frequencies of 100 to nearly 800 kHz, corresponding to the plasma frequency inside the plasmasphere extending down to an altitude of only a few thousand kilometers in the topside ionosphere [1]. Kilometric continuum is found to occur only within about 10 degrees of the magnetic equator and appears to have nearly the same, somewhat fuzzy discrete emission spectrum consisting of narrowband emissions at a constant or slowly drifting frequency often lasting up to 5 hours or more. CRRES Plasma Wave Experiment observed normal continuum, kilometric continuum, cyclotron harmonic, and upper-hybrid emissions near the equator. It is useful to understand natures of these emissions and electron density profiles in the equatorial region in order to examine its source mechanism. Some examples of electromagnetic radiation from steep gradients of electron density irregularities in the equatorial topside ionosphere have been found. Kilometric continuum was observed with multiple narrowband frequency components near the equator. It was observed in both hemispheres including the equator contrary to Jones' beaming theory [2]. The kilometric continuum is received even Kp <= 1. This is not easily understandable. Sometimes it is observed above the equator and the cycrotron harmonics are often observed near but off the equator by CRRES. Its relations with other activities are examined althogh the source of the kilometric continuum is in the equatorial region. References _@_@ [1] K. Hashimoto et al., J. Geophys.
