The rotation of the polarization planes for EM radiation propagating in homogeneous anisotropic space is studied to determine what primeval microwave polarization may have survived to the present epoch. The theoretical study involves integration of the parallel-transport equations in Bianchi type-I and type-V spaces; the former case admits a quasi-isotropic stage, while the latter includes the Milne epoch. Results indicate that smearing of the polarization states is negligible for a realistic world model. In addition, a balloon-borne far-infrared polarimeter has been used to investigate the degree of linear polarization of the microwave background at angular scales from 0.5 to 40 deg.
