Meteors: Luminosities
Scientific paper
Questions connected with the luminosity of meteor trails are considered. It is shown that the heights at which meteor trails are most often observed are characterized by a number of special features. It is concluded that the luminosity of a meteor trail is attributable to the formation of above-thermal electrons with subsequent excitation of trail components (products of abrasion of the meteor and the atmospheric components) by electron collision. The electron temperature in the trail required to produce luminosity is determined to be 6000K or more. It is concluded as a result of comparison with rocket sounding data of the ionosphere that the mechanism of electron heating is linked with the mechanism of the formation of ionosphere inhomogeneities.
