Ariel 5 observed two X-ray outbursts from the LMC in June and July 1977; the events were separated by 17 days and each lasted several hours. The data are consistent with both outbursts being due to a previously unreported transient source designated A0538-66. No evidence was found for regular pulsations. A spectrum obtained near the peak of activity was best represented by a thermal plus Gaunt model with a temperature of 6.5 keV and a 2-sigma upper limit to a low-energy turnover of 2 by 10 to the 22nd power hydrogen atom per sq cm. If this source is in the LMC, the peak flux represents a luminosity of 8.5 by 10 to the 38th power erg/s.
