Consideration of the interaction of a solar wind filament or density irregularity with the earth's magnetic field shows the inadequacy of both open and closed steady-state models of this interaction. When plasma with higher than ambient density encounters the magnetosheath, the kinetic energy of particles is converted into thermal energy by collision with the bow wave, but the filament, unlike the exterior of the solar plasma element, retains a nonzero velocity component normal to the magnetopause, so that the filament penetrates more deeply into the geomagnetic field than does the external solar wind. The deposition of charged particles with energies between 10 eV and 1 KeV by filaments elongated in the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field is discussed.
