The number of stars with large proper motion and a parallax of at least 0.050 arcsec is examined along with the space- and tangential-velocity distributions of 1065 bright stars. Calculations are performed which yield a lower limit of 0.15 star per cu pc for the space density of stars in the solar neighborhood. It is estimated that most stars with proper motions of at least 0.27 arcsec are fainter than magnitude 17.0.
