Four intrinsically very luminous blue variables in M31 and M33 were recently detected at 2.2 microns. These are the most distant single stars to be observed in the infrared. These stars are in many respects similar to the Eta Carinae-type and S Doradus type variables in the Milky Way and LMC. The infrared radiation from three of these peculiar supergiants is possibly due to free-free emission from the extended atmospheres of these hot stars, while the fourth, Var A in M33, has a large infrared excess (V-K = 4.8 mag) which is attributed to circumstellar dust.
