Observationally important consequences of the operation of the Ne-22 (alpha, n) Mg-25 neutron source in red giants exhibiting s-process enhancements and in planetary nebulae whose progenitors were peculiar red giants are reviewed. The predicted observable Ne and Mg abundance changes as a function of s-process enhancement, assuming the Ne-22 neutron source, are derived using published s-process calculations for helium-shell flash models. The predictions are compared with existing observational data, particularly with regard to elemental and isotopic Mg in peculiar red giants and Ne in planetary nebulae. It is shown that the predicted changes in the abundances of elemental Ne and of elemental and isotopic Mg should be observationally significant in stars with s-process enhancements greater than about 5 to 10. Problems involved in associating observed s-process enhancements in peculiar red giants with the Ne-22 neutron source are summarized.
