The unsteady hydrodynamics of spherical, self-gravitating gas clouds and the gravitational collapse of such instellar clouds are studied through use of similarity techniques. Complications due to rotation and magnetic fields are neglected in the investigation. The self-similar core-type collapse solutions developed by Shu (1977) are extended to cases involving more general equations of state and initial density distributions. For initial configurations that approach the static condition, the infall of gas to the massive central core begins only behind the front of an expansion wave propagating outward to the nearly static envelope.
