The suggestion that hot, helium- and metal-poor white dwarfs may be significant thermal soft X-ray emitters is investigated using explicit model atmosphere calculations. These calculations, together with the soft X-ray survey of Vanderhill et al. (1975), place an improved upper limit on the space density (n) of white dwarfs with Te 100,000 K. It is found that n is less than about 0.000004/cu pc for an assumed interstellar neutral hydrogen density of 0.1/cu cm. This limit confirms, and in some cases extends, previous extreme-ultraviolet and soft X-ray limits and suggests that neutrino emission processes may dominate the pre-white-dwarf evolution of these stars.
