The IRIS (Interdisciplinary Research for hydrothermal Interactions during Serpentinization) cruise with the IFREMER ROV-Victor (May-June 2001) was conducted, south of the Azores Triple Junction, to study in detail the Rainbow active site, previously discovered at 36o14'N during the Flores cruise (1998) and to continue exploration on the mount called Menez-Hom, south of the Lucky Strike segment at 37o8'N. In many areas, hydrocasts show high CH4 anomalies (more than 1 {\mu}l/l) in the seawater column. The Rainbow fluids exhibit temperatures of 365oC, pH of 2.8, high chlorinity (750 mmolkg), low silica (6.9 mmolkg), low H2S (1.20 mmolkg), extraordinary high H2 (16 mmolkg), CH4 (2.5 mmolkg) and CO (5 {\mu}molkg) endmember concentrations. Mixing lines show that all fluids vented at Rainbow are issued from a unique deep source which has a uniform chemical composition for major, minor, trace elements, and gases. H2, CH4 and organics are produced through Fischer-Tropsch type (FTT) reactions during serpentinization. The IRIS results show that serpentinization is a common feature along the MAR, producing contrasted fluids and H2 represents a widespread potential energy source for hydrocarbons and prebiotic molecules hydrocarbons derived from mantle and has implications for carbon cycling, petrogenesis, and origins of life.
