Alfven waves, generated by streaming cosmic rays, may decay via a cascade of forward and backward waves, caused by an interaction with sound waves. The analysis of this process by Chin & Wentzel is extended, and limits are placed on the validity of various approximate solutions. In a later paper, these will be used to give self-consistent solutions to the cosmic ray diffusion problem.
