The ionization balance for the ions from C(0) through C(4+) has been calculated for electron densities between 10 to the 8th power and 10 to the 12th power per cu cm and temperatures between 20,000 and 250,000 K. The presence of metastable terms is included in the calculation of the collisional dielectronic recombination and ionization coefficients. The influence of the observed solar radiation field on the ionization balance is investigated. Changes in that field strongly influence the results.
