A positive correlation between the geomagnetic reversal rate and reversal inhibition is indicated by an analysis of the reversal chronology. A model is presented in which internal instabilities of the fluid motion of the core trigger reversals, and the probability for subsequent reversals gradually recovers to its initial value in about 45,000 years following the 5,000-year interval required for a successful reversal of the earth's magnetic field. It is suggested that this recovery period of 45,000 years is related to diffusion of the magnetic field in the earth's core.
