We have studies the circumgalactic environment of Seyfert galaxies,
bright IRAS galaxies and LINERs. We found that both bright IRAS galaxies
and type 2 objects have an excess of companion galaxies with respect to
type 1 and to ordinary field galaxies. Our results do not support the so
called ``unified scheme", and rather suggest an evolutionary scheme.
