Scientific paper

The paper overviews the history of the European Incoherent Scatter scientific radar system (EISCAT), which began operating in 1981, and examines its scientific achievements during its first ten years of operation. The seven objectives realized by EISCAT include (1) clear detection of the polar wind; (2) detailed mapping of an auroral arc; (3) high-resolution studies of the response of the ionospheric E- and D-regions to particle precipitation; (4) clear detection of the association of the auroral electrojets with the generation of atmospheric gravity waves; (5) detection of the 'images' in the ionosphere of the polar cleft, plasmapause, and plasmasheet; (6) measurement of polar cap convection patterns; and (7) mesospheric measurements.
