In this review I will discuss the techniques for the detection of extrasolar planets. These are broadly the Doppler, astrometric, microlensing, direct imaging, interferometric and photometric transit methods. The successes or otherwise of these techniques to date will be outlined and the prospects for future successes will be described, in particular those based on proposed space missions. The paper emphasizes both historical aspects of extrasolar planet detection as well as future prospects over the next few decades. This review was completed in 2002 late June, and only covers material available in the literature or on the internet up to that time.
