In order to determine the nature of the radiation processes in QSOs and BL Lac objects, all four Stokes parameters were measured for the 5-GHz emission of a group of compact, variable, extragalactic sources, between December 1976 and March 1982. Circular polarization significant at the 4 sigma level or greater was measured in 16 of the sources. The circularly polarized flux density demonstrated an even greater fractional variability than the linearly polarized flux density and did not appear to be effected by partial cancellation of oppositely polarized components. Two models were proposed: (1) the circular polarization is the intrinsic polarization of the synchrotron emission of an existing, nonuniform, partly optically-thick source, and (2) the medium through which the radiation propagates converts a small fraction of the linear polarization to circular polarization.
