The equivalence between General Relativity and scalar-tensor theories is
discussed. Vacuum solutions of the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity are
shown to behave ambiguously whenever attempts are made to interpret them
as Einstein's solutions generated by an 'effective' energy-momentum
tensor.
