New optical and infrared observations of the obscured edge-on galaxy NGC 7172 have revealed hitherto unexpected signs of energetic nuclear activity. Deep optical photographs indicate that the galaxy is severely distorted by tidal effects, while the nuclear emission spectrum is found to be indicative of excitation by a power-law photoionization source. Strong infrared emission is also observed from the nucleus, which is variable on a time-scale of approximately three months. A brief discussion of thermal and nonthermal models for the emission mechanism demonstrates that both are consistent with available data. The observations provide new evidence in favor of the identification of the hard X-ray source H2158-321 with NGC 7172 and support a recent suggestion that substantial numbers of active galaxies may exist whose nuclei are largely obscured at optical wavelengths.
