The role of electric currents in the physical process of the Earth's magnetosphere as well as in distant astrophysical plasmas is discussed. In driving these currents MHD dynamos and thermoelectric generators are important. The primary source of power for the Earth's magnetospheric processes is the solar wind, which supplies a voltage of the order of 200 kV across the magnetosphere. The direction of the large-scale solar wind electric field varies on many different time scales. The power input to the magnetosphere is closely correlated with the direction of the large-scale solar wind electric field in such a fashion as to mimic the response of a half-wave rectifier with a dawn-to-dusk conduction direction. Observations indicate that part of the power input to the Earth's magnetosphere comes through MHD dynamo action of a forced plasma flow inside the flanks of the magnetopause, which may play a role in other parts of the magnetosphere, too.
