Mars 3 and 5 magnetic-field data are analyzed, and it is shown that the observations agree best with a theoretical model according to which the magnetosphere is formed under the interaction of the solar wind with a magnetic moment having a small angle of inclination to the planet's axis of rotation. The north pole of the Mars dipole is situated in the southern hemisphere, and Mars possesses a degenerate intrinsic magnetosphere in which the two cusps merge into one characteristic region.
