We identify a sample of faint companions close to bright galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR, Stoughton et al. 2002). The primary sample consists of bright (r' < 21) galaxies with secure spectroscopic redshifts. Potential companions are pruned from the SDSS EDR photometric sample, and are required to be within a projected physical separation of 100 h-1 kpc of a primary galaxy. Photometric redshifts (Csabai et al. 2003) are used to minimize optical contamination of the companion sample. Here we report on the statistical distribution of these potential companions, and comment on the potential of extending this approach to galaxies at higher redshifts.
