The current situation in cometary astronomy and astrophysics is assessed, and a reasonably complete, yet concise and critical, evaluation of the most important issues and promising lines of research in this field is provided. Some of the major past developments of concepts about comets, in particular, the crucial new insights that were gained during the past four decades, are examined. The present possibilities and restrictions of the various observational techniques employed are discussed. Attention is also given to the modeling of cometary comae and tails, the cometary nucleus, and the evolution and origin of comets.
