One of the important aims of the INTERBALL project is to study the structure and dynamics of the geomagnetic tail, including the plasma sheet and neutral (current) sheet as well as plasmoids. According to the orbit evolution during the period from the middle of September, 1995 to the middle of March, 1996, the Tail Probe satellite passed the plasma sheet at regular intervals of about 4 days in the geomagnetic time regions of at first 06:00-00:00 and then 24:00-18:00 LT, and at geocentric distances from 3 to 28 RE (Earth's radii). On the basis of plasma and magnetic field observations, the position of the plasma sheet and its dependence (in a statistical sense) on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By and Bz components are studied. A shift of the plasma sheet in the +YGSM direction when the IMF By component is negative, and in the -YGSM direction when the IMF By component is positive, is found. The results obtained are compared with previous results and models.
