The evolution of the number of globular clusters in a galaxy of arbitrary mass and constant circular velocity is investigated. Numerical simulations have led to the following principal conclusions: (a) if the initial number of clusters is proportional to the mass of the parent galaxy, the current specific frequency of clusters (S_N) must be higher in more massive galaxies; (b) S_N abruptly decreases with age for low-mass galaxies and can be virtually equal to zero in galaxies with M_g < 10^9M_solar; (c) reconstruction of the initial cluster population suggests that the initial specific frequency of clusters was the same in different galaxies.
