Frequency-dependent opacities and mean relaxation times for the hydrodynamical moments are derived. Temperature-density regimes, dominated by multiple Compton scattering combined with emission and absorption processes, are considered. Exact solutions of the Kompaneets equation, linearized around Planck equilibrium, yield 'generalized Kramers approximations' for the opacities for bremsstrahlung plus Comptonization and for double-Compton plus Comptonization. Corrections and modifications are discussed. The rough orders of magnitude of the resulting mean photon relaxation times are consistent with the photon energy generation times computed earlier by Thorne from an ad hoc procedure. This approach covers nondegenerate plasmas at nonrelativistic temperatures, but it can be extended to the case of nondegenerate plasmas at relativistic temperatures. Strong magnetic fields are excluded.
