We argue that it is in general not possible for a contact binary to fulfill (or nearly fulfill) Poincaré's condition for hydrostatic equilibrium and also be in a state of thermal equilibrium.
Such "equilibrium models" have been proposed by Shu et al. (1976, 1979, 1980) and, more recently, by (1989) and by Kähler & Fehlberg (1991). The common cause of the failure of all these models lies in the operation of the second law of thermodynamics.
