We consider the coupling of grand unified theories to N=1 supergravity. The breaking of N=1 local supersymmetry is only manifested at low energies through soft terms explicitly breaking the global supersymmetry. These soft terms (scalar masses, gaugino masses and trilinear scalar couplings) are renormalized at low energies according to the renormalization group. The (mass)2 of the Higgs doublet evolves towards negative values giving rise to SU(2)×U(1) breaking. This is achieved for masses of the top quark mt>~55 GeV. If gluino masses are Mg<~100 GeV, the breaking of SU(2)×U(1) requires mt>~100 GeV.
